POINT ROBERTS — A Fire District No. 5 pickup truck hit a car that was turning onto Gulf Road on Friday afternoon, Nov. 15, in Point Roberts, causing minor damage to the pickup and more serious damage to the car, according to fire officials.
Assistant Fire Chief John Shields was driving a battalion pickup but wasn't responding to a call at the time of the 12:56 p.m. crash, said Fire Chief Christopher Carleton. Shields wasn't hurt. The other driver was given medical aid at the scene, but declined further treatment and had no substantial injuries, Carleton said.
The crash partially blocked the road. It took a while to clear as neither of the two resident Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies was on the Point at the time of the crash, Carleton said. A deputy had to cross the border from the mainland to investigate, and cited the car’s driver for failure to yield, Carleton said.
“We are not at fault,” Carleton said.
An adjuster will assess the damage to the truck, which is still fine to drive, Carleton said.
