Burglar hits occupied Ferndale apartment, shoves woman against wall, police say

Detectives in Ferndale are looking for a man who broke into a woman’s occupied apartment looking for cash and drugs Thursday afternoon, Aug. 18.

Sometime after 3 p.m. a skinny white man in his mid-20s came in through an unlocked sliding glass back door at a first-floor apartment on the 2100 block of Washington Street, the woman, 35, reported to police.

He asked a woman inside for money. She told him she didn’t have any. He rummaged through her handbag, didn’t find anything of value, and shoved her against the wall, she told police. She led him to a lockbox for prescription drugs in a bedroom, and he pried it open with a screwdriver, she reported.

He fled the apartment out the same sliding glass door and ran in the general direction of Mugshots Espresso on Vista Drive, the woman reported. He is described as 6 feet tall, with dirty blond hair, wearing a blue-and-white striped shirt and khaki shorts.

The resident wasn’t threatened with a weapon, according to police. She was taken to St. Joseph hospital for pain in her back and neck.

Police canvassed the neighborhood but found no one who saw anything suspicious. Anyone with tips can contact the Ferndale Police Department at 360-676-6911.
