A 30-year-old man was arrested Sunday night in Bellingham on suspicion of attempting to shoot another man.

Bellingham Police Department Lt. Andria Fountain said officers were called to the 700 block of Northshore Drive on Saturday after multiple reports of gunshots. The man who reportedly was shot at told police that he has known the suspect for years and went over to talk to him while he was waiting to pick up a pizza nearby.

For “reasons unknown” to the victim, the 30-year-old began punching him, according to police. They started to fight, and the 30-year-old then walked over to his truck and pulled out a handgun. The victim was already walking away and across the street when the 30-year-old fired two shots at him.

The suspect fled the area, and no one was injured.

A BPD officer spotted the man walking near the Whatcom County Jail on Sunday night and took him into custody. He told police that he was on his way to turn himself in.

The man faces charges of first-degree assault with a firearm, unlawful possession of a firearm and reckless endangerment. He had yet to be formally charged as of April 6.
