A Lynden woman was sentenced in Whatcom County Superior Court on Tuesday for her role in a 2023 drive-by shooting that left one man injured.

Jordan Kay Velthuizen, 27, was arrested Dec. 28, 2023 on charges of attempted first-degree murder and drive-by shooting.

Court records indicate Velthuizen and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Jesus Geovanny Monreal Bojorquez of Ferndale, shot a man in the parking lot of the Bellingham Walmart in retaliation for a robbery. The two drove up in a Jeep beside the man as he was getting into his car, and Monreal Bojorquez allegedly fired seven shots at him out the driver’s side window. He then drove off.

Two bullets struck the man, and he was eventually taken to the hospital.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office deputies spotted the Jeep shortly after and initiated a traffic stop, according to court documents. The Jeep had different license plates, and officers reported seeing the passenger, Velthuizen, throw a handgun out the window. The gun was found to be a ghost gun with no serial number.

Velthuizen pleaded guilty Tuesday to amended charges of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon, drive-by shooting and possession of a controlled substance. She was sentenced to three years in prison followed by 18 months in community custody.

Monreal Bojorquez remains in Whatcom County Jail in lieu of a $2 million bond on charges of attempted first-degree murder, drive-by shooting and alien in possession of a firearm without a license. His trial is scheduled for March 9.
