Teen arrested after shooting in Cornwall Park

A teenager opened fire on a man Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 12, in a disc golf parking lot at Cornwall Park, according to Bellingham police.

No one was hurt when multiple shots were fired around 3:20 p.m. in the 900 block of East Victor Street, police said.

The shots were fired in the “general direction” of the alleged victim, a 21-year-old man, said Bellingham Police Sgt. Mike Scanlon. Radio dispatches suggested the shooter then tried to hide a handgun in another person’s backpack.

Scanlon confirmed the alleged shooter, 17, and the victim knew each other, but declined to say how, or what precipitated the events Wednesday.

Police arrested the teenager moments later on the outskirts of the park “within running distance” of the scene, Scanlon said.

Because the suspect is a minor, his name hasn’t been released. He faces a charge of felony assault.

The sergeant declined to release much more information — “no comment” as to whether gangs or drugs were involved, or if the gun had been recovered — while detectives investigate.

Police still hope to track down other people of interest in the case.
