Friday Harbor man killed in Mount Baker Highway wreck

A Friday Harbor man was killed early Sunday afternoon, May 31, when he lost control of his motorcycle while passing illegally on a curve and sailed over a cliff along the Mount Baker Highway.

Michael A. Wayner, 61, died at the scene, according to a Washington State Patrol report.

Wayner was headed uphill and passed against a double yellow road marker shortly after noon. The wreck occurred in the area of Milepost 49, where the steep switchbacks begin just below the Mount Baker Ski Area.

He was wearing a helmet, according to the report, but he did not have a motorcycle endorsement for his driver’s license. His motorcycle, a 2007 Yamaha FJR13A, was destroyed.
