Police are warning those who walk in the Cordata area or along a trail by the new Cordata Park that a young man has been groping women.

Five such incidents have been reported since Aug. 31, according to the Bellingham Police Department. They occurred on or near Cordata Parkway between Horton Road and Meadowbrook Court, and along the trail between the two roads.

The attacker approaches from behind and grabs the buttocks, waist or pelvic area of the victim, then runs off in what’s described as an “awkward manner.” The reported attacks occurred between 4 and 8 p.m., according to police.

The suspect is described as 5-foot-2 to 5-foot-6 and about 14 to 20 years old. He’s slender, has short brown hair, a dark complexion and was seen riding a skateboard prior to one attack.

Girls and women who walk in the area are advised to walk with a buddy, keep track of surroundings, keep headphone volume low enough to hear others approaching, and call 911 immediately to report an incident.

Police are walking through the area to keep a tighter watch on it. Anyone with information that might lead police to the groper is asked to call the tip line at 360-778-8611 or online at cob.org/contact/police-tips.aspx.
