Teen dies when car, semi, U-Haul collide on Grandview Road near Ferndale

A teenage driver from the Ferndale area died Thursday afternoon, Feb. 26, when his car was struck by a semi truck and then a large U-Haul truck on Grandview Road.

Dante DeLeon, 16, was driving a black Mazda Protege north on North Star Road around 3:10 p.m. He started to turn left onto Grandview into the path of an eastbound Praxair semi truck hauling a silver carbon-dioxide tank, said Washington State Patrol Sgt. Matt Calderone.

The Protege was dragged on the front bumper of the semi. Both vehicles crossed into the westbound lane. There, they crashed into a 20-plus-foot U-Haul truck. The Mazda was crushed between the semi and the westbound U-Haul.

DeLeon, a Ferndale High School student, died at the scene. He lived in the neighborhood, Calderone said. No one else was in the Protege.

The other drivers, both men, weren’t injured. A drug recognition expert ran them through a series of tests but found no signs of impairment. Troopers saw no obvious signs that DeLeon was impaired; blood tests will be done to confirm if he was sober.

North Star dead-ends at Grandview in a T-intersection. There’s a stop sign on North Star. Grandview traffic doesn’t stop, and it has right of way.

That section of Grandview was closed for hours after the crash for the investigation.
