Blaine semi driver crashes near Hoodsport, blocking highway for 8 hours

A Blaine semi driver crashed into a ditch off Highway 101 in Mason County on Wednesday morning, Jan. 28, leading state troopers to shut down the highway for almost eight hours.

Sergey Kirichkov, 52, reached for something in the cab of the red ’09 Freightliner tractor at 5:04 a.m. while driving southbound on Highway 101 about 10 miles north of Hoodsport, according to the Washington State Patrol. The truck drifted onto the shoulder, then crashed into the ditch.

Kirichkov, who had a seat belt on, wasn’t hurt. The trailer, however, was totaled, and the tractor needed to be towed to an impound yard. Meanwhile the highway was blocked for 7 hours and 50 minutes.

The cause of the crash was listed as “distracted driving,” and Kirichkov was ticketed for driving with his wheels off the road, according to the state patrol.

Last week another Blaine man, Andrey Sergeyvich Kirichkov, was arrested on suspicion of the fatal hit and run of a bicyclist. Charging papers state that the truck Andrey Kirichkov was driving that evening had been registered to his father, Sergey, who was out-of-state at the time.
