Lynden man injured when car goes airborne, hits tree

A 72-year-old man was injured Christmas Eve when his car crossed into the opposite lane of Hampton Road, went airborne and hit a tree.

Vernon L. Miedema of Lynden was taken to St. Joseph hospital after the 5:50 p.m. crash, according to Washington State Patrol. His condition was not available Thursday, Dec. 25.

Miedema was driving a 2002 Chrysler Town and Country east on Hampton about a mile east of Lynden when, for unknown reasons, the car crossed the center line. It went onto the opposite shoulder, causing it to go airborne, then struck several objects before hitting a tree and coming to rest, according to WSP.

Miedema was wearing a seat belt. He was the only person in the car.

The cause is under investigation, though troopers say alcohol was not involved.
