A small, strange fire that caused $15,000 in damage to a Point Roberts home is being investigated as a possible arson.
The house in the 200 block of Windsor Drive was being foreclosed this year, so the regular residents were living elsewhere, said Mitch Nolze, an investigator with the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office.
They swung by to check on the home Sunday, Dec. 21, and found much of the interior coated in soot. There were strange burn marks on the floor by the fireplace and smoke damage throughout the home, Nolze said. Some of the residents’ property hadn’t been moved out yet, so that was damaged, too.
It looked as if someone used the fireplace pilot light to start a small fire on the floor, Nolze said, but investigators don’t know when or why. The damage was most likely discovered a few days after the fire flamed out. The doors had been left unlocked.
So far, investigators don’t have any suspects.
“This was a fairly odd fire for us,” Nolze said.
