Motorcyclist killed in Everson; suspected drunk driver arrested

EVERSON -- A suspected drunken driver from Everson faces vehicular homicide charges after his SUV struck and killed a motorcyclist late Friday, Dec. 5, according to the Washington State Patrol.

Jason L. Schuyleman, 38, had been headed west on Kale Street — State Route 544 on the west side of the Nooksack River bridge in Everson — on a burgundy Honda VF1100c motorcycle around 8:50 p.m.

An eastbound white '03 Chevrolet Suburban turned left in front of him, toward a neighborhood on Christopher Lane. The Chevy driver, Brian J. Smith, 31, of Everson, left the motorcyclist no time to react, according to the state patrol. The motorcyclist hit the passenger side of the Chevy, said Trooper Mark Francis.

Schuyleman, who had a helmet on, was thrown over the SUV. He died hours later at St. Joseph hospital.

Roads were shut down for an investigation.

Troopers suspect Smith had been drinking alcohol. He was arrested. Troopers got a warrant to draw his blood. He resisted arrest at the hospital, Francis said. Smith was in Whatcom County Jail on Saturday on suspicion of vehicular homicide, obstructing law enforcement and resisting arrest.
