The phone scam involving someone posing as a Puget Sound Energy employee continues to make its way around Whatcom County.
The scammer calls businesses and residents, threatening to shut off the power because the bill is past due. Wes Herman, owner of The Woods Coffee, received such a call last week, with the caller saying the power to his cafes would be shut off within the hour. He immediately became suspicious when the caller demanded that he wire money to a specific account. He didn’t fall for the scam.
It’s the type of scam that’s been happening off and on locally this year.
PSE reminds customers that the utility issues several notices to customers before terminating service. For those receiving this scam call, contact PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or local law enforcement.
