Customs patrol boat rescues stricken mariner in Bellingham Bay

Crew members aboard a U.S. Customs and Border Protection boat rescued a man whose sailboat capsized in Bellingham Bay on Sunday afternoon.

According to a Customs statement, the U.S. Coast Guard alerted the crew of a 38-foot Customs and Border Protection patrol boat that a mariner was clinging to a capsized vessel that lost its mast in rough seas Sunday afternoon. The man, whose name and hometown were not disclosed, was treated for hypothermia and taken to a public dock in Fairhaven. He did not require further treatment.

National Weather Service records show winds of 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 24 mph on Sunday afternoon. No information about wave height was available. Air temperature was in the mid-60s.
