Coast Guard rescues pair from sinking powerboat in Chuckanut Bay; boat salvaged, too

The Coast Guard rescued two people from a sinking powerboat in Chuckanut Bay Wednesday night, Aug. 17.

The man and woman on board the boat, who have not been identified, were cruising the bay when the boat began taking on water, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Patrick Joyce, a Coast Guard spokesman.

They called 911 at about 8 p.m., Joyce said. A crew from the Bellingham Coast Guard station and another from the Bellingham Fire Department in the department’s fire boat arrived soon after.

Crews found a 9-inch hole in the powerboat’s hull. It was unclear, Joyce said, how the hole was made.

Neither person onboard the powerboat was injured, Joyce said. Both were transferred to the fire boat while Coast Guard crews began pumping water out of the boat as they towed it back to the Port of Bellingham’s Squalicum Harbor Office.
