Filing period set for board of proposed Columbia Valley park district

People have three days to file their candidacy for the board of the proposed Columbia Valley Park and Recreation District in northeast Whatcom County, which will go before voters Nov. 8.

Voters will decide whether to form the district – essentially agreeing to having their property taxes raised to help parks and recreation – and will elect the five commissioners to govern it should it be approved.

The three-day filing period for commissioner candidates is Wednesday, Aug. 10, to Friday, Aug. 12.

As proposed, three of the commissioners will serve three-year terms and two will serve one-year terms.

To file, fill out a declaration of candidacy form by going to the Whatcom County Auditor’s Office or to whatcomcounty.us/Auditor.

Forms can be mailed to or taken to the Auditor’s Office, 311 Grand Ave., Suite 103, Bellingham 98225. The deadline is 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12.
