Expect traffic detours and slowdowns on Sunset Drive near St. Joseph hospital as city contractors replace an aging water main and 1,700 feet of water piping this month.

The project area is the section of Sunset Drive between James and Ellis streets, just west of Interstate 5. Preparation work, including pavement sawcutting and surveying, will likely begin on Wednesday, Aug. 10. Work on the water main is scheduled to begin Monday, Aug. 15.

During the day, eastbound traffic will occasionally be detoured onto Ellis, Illinois and James streets. Flaggers will direct traffic through the work site and detour route and emergency vehicles will get priority through the work zone.

Some of the work will be performed at night Mondays through Thursdays in order to minimize the impact on the heavily traveled route.
