Bellingham man formally charged for shots fired in Silver Beach neighborhood

A Bellingham man has been charged with two felonies for attempting to shoot another man in Bellingham’s Silver Beach neighborhood on Saturday.

According to court records, a man was at Northshore Market to pick up a pizza with his family. He knew his friend, 30-year-old Navjot Singh, lived across the street on Northshore Drive, and went over to say hello.

Singh walked out of the house and started yelling at the other man, court records show. Singh tried to punch him, but missed each time. The other man then grabbed Singh’s shirt collar to try to gain control, and accidentally ripped off his necklace.

Singh then walked over to a pick-up truck in the driveway and pulled out a handgun. He fired several shots at the other man, who had run back across the street by then. None of the shots hit him.

Police said a Bellingham Police Department officer spotted Singh walking near the Whatcom County Jail on Sunday night and took him into custody. He told police that he was on his way to turn himself in.

Singh was charged with first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

Singh was released from jail Monday night after posting a $150,000 bond.
