Lt. Justin Iverson of Whatcom County Fire District 7 said during his shift on Saturday, July 4, that the best way for people to avoid starting fires is to know the rules in effect this especially warm, dry summer.

“Right now, with the statewide ‘no burning whatsoever,’ ‘no open flame whatsoever,’ hopefully everybody’s familiar with that and will at least follow the rules,” said Iverson, who works out of the of the Church Road fire station.

Fireworks on the Fourth of July were legal in Ferndale and the unincorporated county, where Fire District 7 operates, and Fire Chief Gary Russell said his district had a “pretty mild” night.
