Whatcom teenager dies in single-vehicle motorcycle crash Saturday near Nooksack

A Maples Falls teenager died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash Saturday afternoon, April 18, along South Pass Road east of Nooksack.

David P. Vetkov, 19, died at the scene of the crash, according to the Washington State Patrol release on the crash.

Vekov was riding a 2007 Yamaha YZFR6 westbound on South Pass Road approaching Goodwin Road about 4 p.m. when he lost control, left the roadway and struck a mailbox, a pole and a fence, the report stated.

Vekov was wearing a helmet, according to the release, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Saturday’s fatal crash is the first on Whatcom County roadways in 2020, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation Crash Portal, though there have been eight crashes with a suspected serious injury. The county saw 17 fatal crashes in 2019, WSDOT reported.
