Applicants sought for Whatcom Planning Commission

Whatcom County Council will take applications until 10 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2, for a vacant seat on the Planning Commission.

Council is expected to make the appointment on June 9. Applicants to replace Sam Taylor must live in District 3, which includes northwest Bellingham and places west of Guide Meridian. Taylor, the Ferndale assistant city administrator, stepped down from the nine-member commission because he was moving out of state.

As of Tuesday, May 26, council had received one application, from attorney and geologist Michael Bersch, husband of Ferndale City Council member and 2015 mayoral candidate Carol Bersch. Michael Bersch had applied for the position in October, when Taylor was appointed.

The planning commission meets twice a month and receives no salary. It recommends changes in county zoning and land use for final consideration by the council.

Information on how to apply is on the county website at whatcomcounty.us/1584/How-to-Apply.
