Power restored after outage hits Bellingham

BELLINGHAM -- Electricity went out about 9:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, in a section of downtown.

It was not immediately clear what caused the outage. Puget Sound Energy said 2,241 customers were affected.

Power was restored about an hour later.

The outage included the area of Chestnut, Railroad, Forest and Garden streets down to Holly Street and extended into the Sehome area. During the outage, The Woods Coffee at the corner of Railroad and Chestnut was still operating. The YMCA was without power. The downtown Community Food Co-op was forced to close because of the outage as was the downtown Industrial Credit Union office. Those businesses were expected to reopen now that power has been restored.

Many of the residences around Western Washington University were without power, as was the Alumni House, according to reports on Twitter, but the main campus buildings appeared to still have power.
