Junior Ski to Sea highlight of busy family weekend in Whatcom County

There will be no shortage of family activities and events on a busy Saturday, May 16, in Whatcom County.

Lake Padden Park will be packed with kids participating in the Junior Ski to Sea race. Teams of six kids in third-grade or older will run, bike, hop and kick soccer balls in the park starting with the first race at 9 a.m. until late afternoon.

It’s too late to enter the race. Those not interested watching the race may want to spend the day elsewhere, as parking will likely be difficult to find.

Another key event being held on Saturday is the second day of Bellingham Technical College’s Welding Rodeo. The public is welcome to watch teams of students put together sculptures incorporating the themes of fire and ice using metal Friday through Sunday at the college for free.

SKI TO SEA JUNIOR PARADE

The annual parade begins at 6 p.m. at Cornwall Avenue and Kearney Street, continues down Cornwall and ends at Railroad Avenue and Champion Street.

Participants may begin lining up at 4:15 p.m. Judging starts at 4:30 p.m.
