Ferndale’s Kona bikes to open Bellingham store

A local bike company is putting in a showroom and full-service cycling shop that can showcase all of its models.

Kona Bicycle Co. is opening a store at 1622 N. State St., near Village Lighting. Kona plans to have the 6,600-square-foot space ready by early June, said Cory Blackwood, an employee for the company.

Kona, which has its headquarters at 2455 Salashan Loop, north of Ferndale, wanted to have a showroom exclusively for its 72 different bikes, Blackwood said. The company is known for its mountain bikes, but also has several designs for road bikes.

The store, which will be called the Kona Bike Shop, will also offer cycling accessories and a repair department. The company chose Bellingham for several reasons, including a desire to be more involved in the local community, Blackwood said.

“This is such a big cycling community, and we think it’s only going to continue to grow,” he said, noting all the work that’s being done to add bike lanes in Bellingham, and the growing popularity of the trails in the area.

The size of the building and the large parking lot also were attractive to the company, because it will provide space to host bike demonstrations. Showing the bikes to potential dealers is something regularly done by the company, and testing them on local bike trails has been a good strategy in recent years, Blackwood said.

Hours are still being worked out, but Blackwood said they plan to be open six days a week, closed on Tuesdays.

Kona USA started in 1988 and has steadily grown through the years, Blackwood said. Sales slowed during the global financial meltdown in 2008, but started growing faster than expected around 2012. The company designs the bikes in Ferndale, but are built in other parts of the world.

The company sells its bikes across the U.S., with the West Coast most popular region. Details can be found at konaworld.com.

This story was updated on Friday, May 8 to clarify that the bikes are designed in Ferndale, but built outside this area.
