City Council member Jon Mutchler has announced he will run for mayor in the November 2015 election.

Mutchler, who was elected to the City Council in 2009 and 2013, is the second person to announce candidacy for the race. Mutchler is a current member of the Whatcom Charter Review Commission, a founding pastor of Ferndale Alliance Church and a 35-year Whatcom County resident.

In a letter to supporters Monday, April 20, he wrote: “I am a conservative, but a practical one. We have to govern and serve, but if our values don’t advance the public’s interest they are rubbish. Government is called to do a limited number of things, but must do them well. The rest is up to us — the community.”

Current Mayor Gary Jensen has endorsed Mutchler.

Jensen announced in January he would not seek re-election and instead intends to run for Port of Bellingham commissioner. Three days later, City Council member Cathy Watson became the first candidate to announce her bid for mayor.
