WWU to test alert system Wednesday morning

Western Washington University will test its Western Alert emergency notification system at 8:45 a.m. Wednesday, April 15.

The test will include voice messages over the campus fire alarm system, sending text messages to those who have registered for them, and emailing students and staff. The message also will be posted on the university's web page, Facebook page, Twitter feed and its emergency communication page, emergency.wwu.edu.

New for this test will be a desktop computer notification. The program has been installed on all university computers on campus. During the test, a message will come across the screens. Users will need to click the green “acknowledge” button to make the test message disappear.

The Big Ole steam whistle will not be used during this test to better measure the effectiveness of outside speakers, according to WWU officials.
