Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation offering grants to improve parks and trails

Whatcom Parks and Recreation Foundation is accepting grant applications from groups working to improve parks and trails in Whatcom County.

Grants of up to $1,000 will be awarded, with a total of $2,600 available. The application deadline is May 14; recipients will be announced June 5.

Grant projects should improve a park, trail or recreational opportunity, and provide for involvement by community volunteers. Groups do not need nonprofit status to apply.

Money for this year’s grants was raised by Tom and Janet Boyhan of Everson. Janet is a foundation board member. They raised the money by accepting pledges for their participation in the 105-mile Tour de Whatcom bike ride.

Previous recipients of foundation grants include the Community Boating Center in Bellingham, Everson Garden Club’s pergola in Riverside Park, the caretaker’s house at the Center for Local Self Reliance in Fairhaven Park, Northwest Indian College, and Rock Hill Park in Bellingham’s York neighborhood.
