Members of the public can begin to review and comment on a proposed update to the Whatcom County Comprehensive Plan.

The county is required to regularly update the document, which guides population and job growth in the county through 2036. The county must complete the update by mid-2016.

The county Planning Commission will hold a work session on proposed changes to chapter 1 of the plan, which contains growth projections tentatively set by the county and cities in 2014. All the cities — Bellingham, Blaine, Everson, Ferndale, Lynden, Nooksack and Sumas — are planning to grow faster than the mid-range projection of the state Office of Financial Management.

The unincorporated county was set to take 15 percent of the population growth through 2036, down from 24 percent from 2000 to 2010.

The snowy, windy winter weather Whatcom County has experienced the past two weeks has kept area fire departments busy and played a role in three deaths in separate structure fires in one week.
