Ferndale High School to hold gathering Friday in memory of teenager killed in crash

Community members are invited to gather at the Ferndale High School auditorium at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, in memory of Dante DeLeon, a student killed in a car crash Thursday afternoon.

DeLeon, 16, was a sophomore at Ferndale High School. He was turning his car from North Star Road onto Grandview Road when he was hit by a semi truck and then a large U-Haul truck traveling in opposite directions on Grandview on Thursday.

The crash is still under investigation. The area is not safe to set up a memorial.

DeLeon’s family and friends have set up a memorial at Quest Karate, 1920 Main St. #4, at the Carnation Building in Ferndale. The site is open and available to all who want to reach out in memory of DeLeon. There is also a memorial at the Ferndale High School campus near the flag pole.

The Ferndale School District wrote the following on its Facebook page: “Any time there is a tragedy, we need to take care of each other. At Ferndale High School, counselors and support staff are available to students and staff today. We are focused on pulling together as a school community, reaching out to those who are grieving this sudden loss.”

Linda Fell, a grief support specialist, will be at the 7 p.m. gathering in the auditorium.
