South Whatcom Library, which has been operating since summer from the lobby of the Sudden Valley YMCA because of structural damage to its building, will close for several days starting Thursday, Feb. 19, so materials can be moved to a larger temporary location nearby.
On Tuesday, Feb. 24, the library will reopen in a new location at the Sudden Valley Adult Center, 10 Barnview Court inside Sudden Valley Gate 2.
Library officials say it is unknown how long the library will be using the Adult Center. South Whatcom Library opened in March 2014 after years of fundraising and remodeling to an old horse barn under an agreement with the Sudden Valley Community Association, the private community that owns the barn. After just three months, engineers found that significant damage from insect pests had left the building vulnerable to collapse. Sudden Valley officials are pursuing an insurance claim with the intent of repairing the damage.
The new library space will include about 80 percent of the library’s collection, plus computers, Wi-Fi, a children’s area and a teen area. A small meeting room will be available for public use.
