Whatcom council taking applications for Crawford’s replacement

The Whatcom County Council Office is accepting applications until 4 p.m. Feb. 19 to replace council member Sam Crawford, who announced his resignation.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and registered voters who live in District 2, which includes northeast Bellingham, Nugents Corner, Lynden, Everson, Nooksack, Sumas and other northeast county communities. Council members cannot be county employees or hold another public office.

Applications will be at whatcomcounty.us/council. Call 360-676-6690 for more information.

Ex-council member Kathy Kershner and recent state House candidate Satpal Sidhu have already expressed their interest in the position.

Crawford is resigning on March 1 to take on increased responsibilities at his workplace. The remaining six councilors will appoint his replacement no later than April 1. If four council members can’t agree on an applicant, Executive Jack Louws will have until mid-April to make the appointment.

Crawford’s unfinished term ends in November. Candidates seeking his seat after that must run in this year’s countywide election.
