Safeway to open Bellingham store Feb. 6

Safeway has announced it is planning to open its Sunset Square grocery store on Friday, Feb. 6.

The 67,000-square-foot store is opening in the former Cost Cutter space. The Safeway gas station that is going in next to Starbucks at Sunset Square will open the same day.

Once open, the gas station will have regular hours of 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., but those who pay at the pump can use it overnight. The grocery store will be open 24 hours a day.

Safeway previously had stores in Bellingham but closed the last one in 1993. It’s other Whatcom County store in Lynden opened in 2002.
