Firefighters donate coats to Alderwood students

Firefighters from Whatcom County Fire District 8 and the city of Bellingham Fire Department gave nearly 100 new winter coats last month to students at Alderwood Elementary School as part of the nationwide Operation Warm project.

Operation Warm is a nonprofit sponsored by the International Association of Firefighters, the union that represents most Whatcom County career firefighters. IAFF Local 106 firefighters from all over Whatcom County conducted a fall fund drive that include a fundraiser at Boundary Bay Brewery. Other local contributors include: Alcoa Intalco Works, SpaceBand, Bar Code Repair, Son-Rise Property Management, and Maggie's Pub.

Local 106 members used off-duty time to size all of the children and deliver the coats to their school. At the distribution event, firefighters brought a reserve engine and conducted a fire-safety program.
