Some Whatcom businesses closing early for New Year’s Eve

Some businesses will close early Wednesday, Dec. 31, while others will stay open late for New Year’s Eve parties.

Many small businesses will be closed Thursday, but most larger retailers and restaurants will be open New Year’s Day.

Public schools and local colleges remain closed for holiday break.

Here is the status of some common places for Jan. 1; those closing early New Year’s Eve are noted. If you’re in doubt about the status of a business, call ahead.


Haggen: Regular hours.

The Markets, Cost Cutter, Food Pavilion: Regular hours.

Albertson’s: Regular hours.

Fred Meyer: Regular hours.

Safeway: Regular hours.

Winco: Regular hours.

Community Food Co-op: Stores close 8 p.m. New Year’s Eve and reopen 10 a.m. New Year’s Day.

Trader Joe’s: Closes 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve. Closed New Year’s Day.

Everybody’s Store: Regular hours.


Whatcom County offices: Closed Thursday.

Bellingham city offices: Closed Thursday.

Bellingham parking meters: Not enforced Thursday.

Whatcom County Library System and bookmobile: Closes 5 p.m. Wednesday. Closed Thursday.

Bellingham Public Library: Closes 6 p.m. Wednesday. Closed Thursday.

Banks: Closed Thursday, though most online banking will be available.

U.S. Postal Service: Post offices close early Wednesday, with many closing at noon. Offices closed and no mail delivery Thursday.

Garbage: SSC and Nooksack Valley Disposal will pick up trash as scheduled Thursday; trucks might be earlier than normal, so set out trash Wednesday night. SSC office and the recycling/transfer station at F and Roeder streets closed. Recycling and Disposal Services, 4916 LaBounty Drive, open regular hours Thursday.

Whatcom Transportation Authority: No buses running Thursday.

The Bellingham Herald: Customer service available by phone, 360-676-2660, from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and 6:30 to 9 a.m. Thursday. Offices close 3 p.m. Wednesday and are closed Thursday.

Opportunity Council: Closed Thursday.

Boys & Girls Club: Bellingham club closed through Jan. 2 for maintenance. Ferndale club open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday; closed Thursday and Friday.


Bellis Fair: Open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Some stores and restaurants with outside entrances have longer hours.

Retail stores: Most open, but some smaller stores will be closed. Call ahead to confirm.

Restaurants: Some open late Wednesday. Most open Thursday. Call ahead.


Casinos: Open; most have New Year’s Eve special events.

Movie theaters: Open.

Whatcom Museum: Closed Thursday.
