Renovations to Lowell Elementary School will begin Monday, Dec. 22, and construction is expected to continue until August 2015, Bellingham School District officials said.
A new 9,500 square-foot gymnasium will be added to the north side of the school along 15th Street, according to the district website. A cafeteria, music classroom, elevator and play area will also be added inside the new building.
Lowell’s renovation will be the first district project completed as part of a $160 million bond approved by voters in November 2013. Other projects in the bond include rebuilding Sehome High School and Happy Valley Elementary and building a new Options/Innovations High School.
Tiger Construction, based in Everson, was awarded the $4.38 million contract for the project.
Final recommendations for the additional building were finalized in June 2014, said district spokeswoman Jacqueline Brawley.
A web cam will be installed once construction starts for those wishing to track the progress. It will be shown on Lowell’s school website.
