WTA might offer veterans half-price fares

Military veterans might become eligible for half-price fares on Whatcom Transportation Authority buses.

The WTA Board of Directors will take public comment on a proposal to allow veterans to pay the reduced fare at a hearing at 8 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the county courthouse, 311 Grand Ave.

By showing a veteran’s medical ID card or a “DD-214” notification of discharge, a rider could purchase a $25 monthly pass for $13, or pay 50 cents for a single ride. Active-duty members of the military would not qualify.

The reduced fare is currently available to youths, students, seniors and people with disabilities. If approved by the board, reduced fares for veterans would take effect on Jan. 2, 2015.

In addition to the hearing, WTA is taking comments until 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 10, at 360-715-4500 or rickn@ridewta.com. Comment letters may be mailed by that date to Rick Nicholson, 4111 Bakerview Spur, Bellingham, WA 98225.
