Freezing rain expected at high elevations in Whatcom, Skagit

Freezing rain is expected to fall Thursday, Dec. 4, in the Cascades, including higher elevations in Whatcom and Skagit counties.

Drivers going through any mountain passes or high-elevation roads should be cautious, as any such rain will freeze on the roads, creating treacherous conditions.

The National Weather Service has a freezing rain advisory in effect until 10 p.m. Thursday. Freezing rain could continue overnight and into Friday at the higher elevations.

Mt. Baker Ski Area is expected to get a mix of freezing rain and snow on Thursday, likely turning to all snow overnight, according to the NWS. A few inches are expected by the weekend, but it’s unlikely based on the forecast that Baker will be able to open by Saturday.

Any precipitation in the lowlands is expected to come as rain.
