Bellingham’s Barkley Company wins state award

The Barkley Company is one of four Washington businesses selected for the 2014 Corporations for Communities award.

The award comes from the Washington Secretary of State. Barkley won the award in the small-company category, along with the Old Cannery Furniture Warehouse in Sumner. John Howie Restaurants in Bellevue and Colfax-based McGregor Company won in the large-company category, according to a state news release.

Secretary of State Kim Wyman will give each company a National Association of Secretaries of State Medallion Award during a ceremony in her office at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12. The Medallion Award recognizes civic engagement, voter education efforts, government services and a commitment to giving back to the community.

Barkley Company, which includes Talbot Real Estate, was nominated for its corporate giving in the Bellingham community. It gave free space and renovated its local library branch as well as donated more than $80,000 annually to several organizations.
