Candidates for Whatcom County Charter Review Commission will be introduced to voters at three separate meetings, all to be held 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
The county charter outlines the rules for how county government will run, including how many council members will serve (seven) and a list of the separate powers held by council members and the executive, who are all elected. The commission will meet next year to review the rules in the charter and propose changes that would go to a countywide vote in November 2015.
The commission will have 15 members, five from each County Council district. In all, 48 candidates seek a commission seat in the Nov. 4 election, but voters will choose only from candidates who live in their district.
Residents of District 1 should attend the meeting at Rome Grange, 2821 Mount Baker Highway. The meeting for District 2 voters will be at Ten Mile Grange, 6958 Hannegan Road, near Pole Road. The District 3 meeting is at North Bellingham Grange, 5255 Northwest Drive near Smith Road.
