The Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s Office will lift the ban on outdoor burning effective 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, for unincorporated areas of the county.
At that time, verbal burn permits will be available. Written permits will be available by appointment no earlier than Monday.
A permanent ban on outdoor burning remains in effect for Bellingham, Lynden, Ferndale, Blaine, Everson, Nooksack and Sumas as well as the Birch Bay, Kendall and Cherry Point areas, along with city urban growth areas. For more information on the permanent ban, contact the Northwest Clean Air Agency at 360-428-1617 or nwcleanair.org.
To obtain a verbal permit in areas where burning is allowed, call 360-676-6934. Fires under 4 feet in diameter require a free verbal permit; larger ones require a written burn permit. Burning garbage and the use of burn barrels is illegal statewide and subject to fines up to $1,000.
