Rofkar to be honored at Bellingham peace celebration Sept. 21

Longtime human rights activist Barbara Rofkar will be honored with a lifetime peacemaker award at the Sept. 21 International Day of Peace celebration in Bellingham.

The Whatcom Peace & Justice Center will give Rofkar the 2014 Howard Harris Lifetime Peacemaker Award. Rofkar, an instructor in global studies at Western Washington University, has long been one of the lead coordinators of the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force, has been instrumental in organizing the Martin Luther King Human Rights Conference each year and helped found the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center.

The presentation will be during the celebration at 5 p.m. Sept. 21 at the Majestic, 1027 N. Forest St. The free event, open to all, includes performances by the Upfront Theatre, The Walrus and Snug Harbor.
