High Street closed to cars through Western Washington University campus

The section of High Street that runs through Western Washington University’s campus will be closed to all vehicle traffic except for buses, police and emergency vehicles 24 hours a day.

The university has been allowed to close those few blocks of the street during weekdays since the city passed an ordinance in 1976.

University officials requested the permanent closure times due to foot and bicycle traffic on campus that has grown significantly since the ’70s.

City Council approved the closure during its Monday night meeting, Sept. 8.

The city could reopen the street during snowy or icy weather, as the grade through campus is less steep than that of the routes around it.
