Injured hiker rescued by helicopter at Racehorse Creek

A rescue helicopter airlifted an injured hiker from a remote area of Racehorse Creek on Saturday, Sept. 6.

Layne Taylor, 21, of Bellingham, slipped and broke his ankle about 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, in a remote area near Racehorse Creek off North Fork Road, said Whatcom County sheriff's Deputy Mark Jilk.

A volunteer rescue team reached Taylor on Friday night, but they determined that it would be too difficult to carry the victim to safety. They stayed with him through the night and called from help from the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, which sent a helicopter.

Taylor was strapped to a special basket and the helicopter moved him to a location near his car, where was driven by private vehicle to St. Joseph hospital for medical treatment.
