A Whatcom County man is expected to recover after accidentally shooting himself in the leg while working in a friend’s garage Monday, March 19, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to St. Joseph hospital at about 12:30 p.m., where a 49-year-old man was being treated for a gunshot wound to his lower leg. The injury was not life threatening.
The man, whose name was not released, told deputies he was working in his friend’s garage south of Lynden when the accident occurred. He said he put his small-caliber handgun on a shelf, and when he went to move the gun, it fell out of its holster and went off as it hit the concrete floor. The bullet struck him in the lower leg, and he was taken in a private vehicle to the hospital. He called 911 while he was on his way to the hospital.
