BELLINGHAM - Crews demolished a smokestack at the site of the former Georgia-Pacific West Inc. pulp mill on Bellingham's waterfront Tuesday, June 14, part of the ongoing demolition project at an old steam plant building.

Workers toppled the deteriorating stack with a piece of heavy equipment after securing it with cables to control its fall.

Atlanta-based G-P has contracted the job to Staton Companies of Eugene, Ore., the same firm that demolished the old tissue mill in 2008. The city of Bellingham issued a permit authorizing the steam plant work.

G-P spokesman Kelly Ferguson said some industrial artifacts from the building will be saved for possible historic displays.
