Bellingham bike thief ruins Swiss tourist's travel plans

A Swiss tourist’s travel plans were ruined Friday, May 8, when his bicycle was stolen outside the Fred Meyer store on West Bakerview Road in Bellingham.

The 27-year-old man flew into Vancouver, B.C., with plans of riding his bicycle to San Diego, said Sgt. David Richards of the Bellingham Police Department.

The man was on the second day of his trip when he stopped by the Fred Meyer at 11 a.m. to buy food, Richards said. He put a cable lock through the tires and left his bike sitting out front of the store. When he returned, the bike and four containers containing his clothes and other belongings were gone, Richards said.

Richards said the man checked into a hotel room Friday to figure out what to do with his trip. The bike is a Canyon Swiss racing bicycle with blue and grey painting. Anyone with information about this theft should call 911.
