Autopsy results pending for man in Lummi Shore crash

Whatcom County Medical Examiner Gary Goldfogel is awaiting toxicology results before finishing the autopsy report on a man who died in a car crash on Lummi Reservation Sunday, Jan. 4. That could take up to six weeks, Goldfogel wrote in an email.

Jay A. Phair, 43, of Bellingham, was pronounced dead at the scene after his 2003 black Mitsubishi drove off Lummi Shore Road near Smokehouse Road and crashed on top of rocks near the bay, said Washington State Patrol Trooper Keith Leary.

Phair may have suffered a medical emergency, Leary said, because Phair did not appear to have any major physical injuries resulting from the crash other than a cut above his right eye. Phair was not wearing a seat belt.
