BELLINGHAM - The previously scheduled full closure of Sunset Drive this week has been postponed, and officials are now aiming for mid-January to close the highway to install a stormwater vault.
The closure was scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 8, as part of the Sunset Drive widening project, between Woburn Street and East McLeod Road. The work could be delayed again if there's poor weather, said Mark Handzlik, project engineer at Bellingham Public Works.
Whatcom County put a weight restriction on roads to keep heavy vehicles from damaging roads sitting on frozen-then-thawed soils. That restriction has made it difficult to get some equipment to the Sunset-widening project, Handzlik said.
