Bellingham Technical College fish hatchery not closing

BELLINGHAM — The fish hatchery at Maritime Heritage Park, which is run by Bellingham Technical College, is not being shut down.

Gov. Chris Gregoire announced in December that seven fish hatcheries around the state may be closed due to the state budget deficit, including one in Whatcom Falls Park.

College officials have been receiving numerous phone calls about whether or not the hatchery is closing, said Marni Saling Mayer, the director of marketing and communications for the college.

The college runs the fisheries technology program out of the Whatcom Creek facility. The college is currently raising money to replac-ing the aging building there with a multimillion-dollar NW Center of Environmental, Fisheries and Aquaculture.
