Whatcom County residents looking to usher in the new year by enjoying the recent snowfall at the Mt. Baker Ski Area Thursday, Jan. 1, and through the weekend aren't likely to be stuck waiting for road crews to do avalanche control.
While crews will be doing avalanche control on Interstate 90 Thursday, crews here did their work Tuesday, said Bronlea Mishler, a state Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
The ski area plants and detonates charges in areas where avalanches are likely, Mishler said, and the DOT does traffic control and plows away the blasted snow.
They try to do the work at midday, when most people are already at the ski area, Mishler said. The work usually closes the highway for an hour or two.
